JOINT pain is a common problem that afflicts people regardless of age or gender. The condition limits activity which affects one’s quality of life and ability to work. Some common complaints from adults with joint pain include limited movement, lack of sleep (less than six hours per day), psychological distress and poor health.
The immediate cause of joint pain is the loss or wear and tear of cartilage in the joints which attributes to inflammation. A person’s joint cartilage undergoes constant wear and tear everyday. However, when inflammation develops, it causes the breakdown and eventual loss of cartilage in the joints (cartilage degeneration). This can lead to a condition known as osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease.
Knee pain is the most common complaint but joint pain can affect any part of the body, from the ankles and feet to the shoulders and hands. As one gets on in age, painful joints become increasingly prevalent. However, today joint pain is becoming common among people earlier in age.
According to the Global Burden of Disease 2010 Study, an estimated 2.51 million people suffer from knee osteoarthritis worldwide. In Malaysia, it is predicted that 9.3% (approximately three million) of adults have knee ache and pain issues. Joint pains can be linked to several reasons including obesity, gender, previous injuries and other causes. The remedy for joint conditions besides watching one’s weight perhaps lies in both cartilage protection and anti-inflammatory actions. With this, it has been proven that hydrolysate collagen is beneficial in improving joint symptoms and helping improve mobility.
Flexigen, a supplement made of hydrolysate collagen, helps protect joints from damage, strengthens joints and reduces joint pain by regenerating joint cartilage. It also encourages easy absorption and development of joint tissues, thanks to the combination of amino acids and bioactive peptides, weighing 3.3kDa. In a study conducted on Flexigen, it was demonstrated that 95% of the supplement was absorbed from the intestine within 12 hours after oral administration. Over the past 30 years, more than 20 clinical studies have been carried out on hydrolysate collagen ingestion in reducing joint collagen damage, joint pain and erosion (osteoarthritis).
Another set of clinical studies show that hydrolysate collagen stimulates joint collagen tissue regeneration by increasing the type II collagen synthesis. Flexigen provides 10g of hydrolysate collagen that helps promote and regenerate healthy joints, thereby reducing pain in osteoarthritis and
decreasing consumption of pain killers. A number of studies has demonstrated that the administration of 10g per day of hydrolysate collagen for a period of three months helps:
1. improve joint functions;
2. reduce pain;
3. decrease dependency on pain killers; and
4. improve leg strength.
Flexigen is available at all leading pharmacies.
