Ming Xiang Tai has been making a name for itself since the launch of their shops in Penang. But this pastry making company has been doing it for a long time coming.
It all began at home in 1975 with egg tarts and were selling these fragrant pastries on the streets with three wheelers in 1979. It wasn’t until 2002 did they sell the pastries in a shop, although it wasn’t their own but now they do. The better news is that they have 2 branches in Penang now! Ming Xiang Tai’s new outlet loaded with those delicious and delicately flaky pastries.
Ming Xiang Tai is famed for its gorgeous, flaky pastry with all sorts of filling. The will be 4 different flavours in this box of goodies. Let’s start with the sweet ones which are the pineapple pastries and the glutinous coconut puffs. The pineapple pastry is sort a tart with flaky pastry and generous pineapple jam for its filling. But unlike normal pineapple tarts, this one has a few chunky pineapple cubes inside which adds to its novelty.
The coconuts puffs are fragrant and have rich coconut flavours and a surprise slightly chewy centre of black glutinous rice. The mix of the sweetness of the coconut and savoury of the glutinous parts creates a beautiful blend of flavours. Plus the sprinkle of black sesame seeds and sunflower seeds on the top make it look rather pretty.
The savoury flavours in the box are the chicken floss pastry and the salted egg pastry that all probably all time favourites. The salted eggs pastry comes with a salted egg wrapped in lotus paste. Yumms. The chicken floss pastry also has a thin layer of lotus paste in the inside, keeping the pastry moist so it’s not too dry for consumption.
