Storage Space in the Kitchen
The storage space is one of the most important limiting factors in most kitchens today. We all wish we could have a bigger kitchen and although this is not always possible, there are many ways to add storage in a small kitchen.
If you have space at the centre of your kitchen, the island is one of the best ways to utilise space for more storage and bigger work space. An island can be as simple as a small rectangle base of cabinets with counter top to a bigger and complex one with cooking centre, preparation area, sink and breakfast table attached. Islands can also be installed in other locations such as against the wall or as an extension to existing cabinets.
Some of the common mistakes in kitchen design is installing an island that is too big relative to the overall kitchen and not planning enough space around it for manoeuvring and accessing the cabinets. Even if you do have the space, installing a big island with large countertop means a lot of space to clean.
Most kitchens also have nooks and corners that can be turned into storage space by adding a corner cabinet. There are also great accessories like carousel baskets, magic corner and le man pull out tray to open up the dead corner space and make it easy to access items stored. It is important when choosing drawers and pull-outs to go for full extension drawers as these can extend all the way out cabinets. Single extension drawers in comparison may leave as much as one fifth of the drawer inside the cabinet. It is also a good idea to have dividers in the drawers to create compartments to facilitate easy storage.
When it comes to “what goes where” the logical answer is to store most-used items nearest to the work areas for fast and easy access. Use pull-outs rather than fixed shelves for easy access and prevent hurting your back. These should be kept in front to save you having to hunt for them while items that are not frequently used can be stored in higher or lower level and kept at the back. keep in mind that the kitchen is one of the rooms in your ome that must be well organized since you have stuff there like knives and stoves that are dangerous especially to kids.
